A Date With Some Yorkshire Ladies. 😉

To day was the day that myself and Salford Pete were heading off over to the wrong side of the hills, up the M67 and over to Yorkshire.
Our target for the day were
Yorkshire Ladies . . . .
Ladies if the stream that is . . . . .
Otherwise known as. . . . .

GRAYLING !!!!!!!!

Being born and bred Mancunians grayling are a foreign species to us and, unfortunately neither of us have bagged one on our travels.

 ( Well. . . . . I have had one from Lymm Vale but I don't count still water grayling )

We were meeting a friend of mine and a new member of my float making group on face book,
Jordan O'Halloran,
a local Yorkshire lad with bags of knowledge regarding ladies.
😉😉😉😉😉😉
( Dont tell the Mrs.... 🤣 )

We met around 08.00 on the River Don.
Unfortunately, the river was high, coloured and pushing through at a fair old rate of knots.
Not the best grayling conditions but this trip was planned months ago so we all decided to give it a go.
Jordan knows this river well so my dad and I hung onto his coat tails as he led us up the river to one of his favourite runs.

Jordan had no reservations and promised us that we would bag a grayling.
No pressure there Jordan !!!!!!!!!
🤣

When we arrived at the first run we set up our kit.  While chatting and exchanging old fishing tails
Jordan brought out his Acolyte Ultra, perfect for normal river levels but, in my opinion was to light for the conditions unless fishing back waters and eddies.

With the river bombing through I left the Acolyte plus in the holdall and drew out the Creature Reacher.
This rod is for too heavy for standard grayling fishing but I had to fish a very heavy float in the shallow river to combat the extra pace in the water.

The float was an extra large Irwell Stick Float taking 8 BB ( ) sounds a little brutal as does the rod choice but the conditions required it.
On his first trot through Jordan got a hook up which proved to be a quality little brown trout, not our intended quarry but he was off the mark.
I was next and caught the mirror image of Jordan's fish. Saldord Pete was happy watching at this stage.  If he wanted to try and bag a grayling he could use one of our rods anyway.l
He typically started off the banter as he normally does stating.......
Let me know when you lads want a 12 ounser and I will get one first cast.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

With out any grayling to show for our troubles we headed off to a couple of new runs.
The next lot of runs produced only one trout between us . . . . .
The pressure was starting to show on Jordan
 . . . Lol.
😄😄😄😄😄😄😄
We sat down for a chat and decided what to do next,  like a true Yorkshire Man Jordan pulls out a stove,
a kettle
and Yorkshire Tea Bags....lmao
We had a lovely brew......I must admit.
Jordan then said
" Rite lads I will take you to my banker pegs next.
If we don't catch grayling there I will buy you a Manchester Untied season ticket "
For a tight Yorkshire man to say that he must be confidant.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

As we arrived at the banker pegs we started  trickling in some grubs.
The river was still bombing through though, plus a down stream wind did not help matters.
After forty five fish less minutes the pressure was building and Jordan did not look to happy.
The sweat was showing on his forehead and he was visible shaking at the thought of have to enter....
Old Trafford.
 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.

Five minutes later a smiling Jordan skips round the corner with something in his landing net.
" It's not a big one Mike but it is what we came for "
he said in his broad Yorkshire drawl.
I looked in his net and saw a lovely little grayling of around 4 oz.
He was fishing to the right of the banker peg in  slack water.
' There is another slack further up Mike " said Jordan.
I did not need telling twice and scurried up the banking to the said peg.
I was fishing a foot deep in coloured water about 6 foot from the bank.
Within two minutes the Irwell Stick buried and I was into my first grayling.
The smile on our faces said it all.
I have wanted to catch a river grayling for years and I had finally done it.

Best fish picture of the day.
😊

But the grayling kept coming !!!!!
Salford Pete was next and with a belting fish of 12 oz
Not big by any means but a great start and as suspected, myself and my dad are confirmed grayling fans.
😊

Our two set ups.
Acolyte Ultra &
The Harrison SU Creature Reacher. 🤣
Myself & Salford Pete.
After he landed the biggest Lady of the day.
 ( She was a big piece . . . Lol )
Group shot at the end of a fantastic day.
Best fish and float picture.
Ugliest mug shot.
🤣

Jordan with the smallest fish of the day.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
but to be fair he had a 12 ounce fish as well.

The gill plate colours are amazing.
The colours are a little like the pearlscent inlays on my floats.
😊
In to a small brownie.
My first fish of the day.

Playing with a lady.
😲
What a great fight they give to !!!!!!!!
Salford Pete on an urban mooch.
Last run.
I finished with sixteen grayling and four trout and was more than happy with the days tally.
These are truly beautiful fish and I will be back to this fine river in the near future
I love this kind of fishing.
All three of use really hit it off.
He is is a happy cheeky chappy.........a little like my dad and I.
We took the mickey out of each other all day and had a right good laugh.

Thanks a lot Jordan.
We owe you one.
Lets do it again soon on the Irwell.

Until the next time. . . . .
